Maize price hikes leaving business community worried and Consumers pessimistic

Being the most widely consumed food, posho prices
have sky rocketed due to scarcity of maize at the millers.
The price of posho is now at 2600 shillings amount
that used to purchase rice at a retail shop, Posho is becoming like a cake to
many as more consumers are soon doing away with buying this food because it is
expensive.
The maize is in the hands of few business men who have gotten stores with huge stocks
of more thousands of maize sucks.
These Agro business men have taken advantage of the
situation to sell maize at 1450 Ug shillings a kilogram increasing prices of
the output by miller owners. The bag of 100kg posho is sold at 240000 Ug
shillings
Monica Bumba, a business woman at Bugembe Agali Awamu famously known as Kazi Mingi said that maize is got from far western Ugandan districts of Kisoro, Kyenjojo and in areas of Kiboga.

“Our fellow business friends have given it a break as
they do not have access to maize, and less quantity in supply is expensive and yet
we have no money to buy it. We are waiting for the fruitful season to come
which I can not tell.” She said

There is drought and famine in many parts of Uganda
though some are experiencing some rainfall and some are being helped by the
NGOs to give some foods and relief to the people.
The famine and draught was caused by the two seasons
that saw no harvests due to un reliable rain that falsely seduced farmers to do
planting yielding nothing in return.
Much rain was expected in this month of March up to
June but all in vain
